Raewyn and family, I wish to express my heartfelt regret to you all in respect to Neil's passing. He was a friend of mine, whom I ran against and enjoyed the pleasure of doing so. Many happy memories in Pebbley Hill etc. I wish to express my sincere regret at Neil's passing. It has created many memories of early times and what was a good friend. Kindest regards. Paul Perniskie

Neil, where do I start, from the time you shouted heaps of chardonnay for Mitch hitting a 100 in Nelson, what an awesome bloke, too many years later where you and Mitch would challenge myself and Greg to many rounds of golf which we loved and shared many beers after every round. I remember one round where you and Mitch were playing in a tournament and my drive went right and you two were coming up the other fairway and who is this lining up to play my ball as Mitch is yelling to you dad that isn't your ball, we all laughed. I am going to miss those games mate and memories. You would always say hello, ask how things are going, all the small things that mattered. A genuine nice bloke. Just always so generous and a cracking human. You raised an awesome family. Fly high up there mate, you will be missed, thanks for the great memories.

In 1975 our band Prediction played only our fifth ever gig, it was at Neil’s 20th birthday, we were introduced to the entire van Schaik family that night and remained friends with Neil and his family ever since, we feel the loss you are all feeling and we will miss him, back then in 1975 we were just 16 & 17 years old, so it has been a long friendship, farewell dear friend, Neil & Peter Chilton.

My sympathy to Raewyn and family for the tragic loss of Neil. A genuinely nice guy. Not so nice as to let me beat him in the 800m at Surrey Park though! As consolation, I was at least able to beat him in the 1500m. These are very treasured memories from my teenage years as we regularly did battle at Surrey Park. Thank you Neil.

Neil had become a friend of myself and my wife when, like many others, we contacted him to be our Real Estate agent when we moved to Invercargill. As he was a postage stamp collector, we saved our foreign stamps as they arrived and kept them for Neil. He would occasionally call by for a chat and a cuppa, at the same time picking up his stamps. We were proud that he considered us as friends during the last twenty or so years. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family as they mourn the loss of Neil.
